Safe Zones: Creating Inclusive Student Communities
Presented by Josh Magallanes, Seattle Counseling Service

Safe Zones is a workshop that focuses on building a campus climate for GLBTQ communities and allies to utilize strategies in order to address individual and institutional forms of homophobia.  This session is specifically designed for student leaders to gain skills on how to build inclusive and equitable student communities.  Joshua Magallanes of Seattle Counseling Service has an educational background in counseling and has presented multiple Safe Zones trainings to the campus community.

Spirituality, Building Relationships and Meaning Making Presented by Tim Wilson and Nicole Hoyes-Wilson, Seattle University

Leadership of the 21st century calls for holistic understanding of self and others.  Explore the spiritual dimensions of leadership that places intuition, empathy and reflection at the center of action.  Tim Wilson serves as a faculty member in the College of Education at Seattle University and currently is the Assistant to the Vice President for Student Development.  Nicole Hoyes-Wilson is the Associate Director for Learning Communities and Seattle University and has extensive experience in working with student communities.

How to Have Presence
Presented by Carel Neffenger, Speech Department-Highline Community College

How do you inspire people to get involved with a cause you believe in?  How do you make your voice heard deeply?  Presence is a leadership quality that can be learned and nurtured.  This session will teach you how to tap into your own presence in order to connect with others.  As a communication studies instructor at Highline Community College, Carel Neffenger has taught for 14 years and has worked in the field of student development and leadership at USC and UCLA.

Presented by Kayleen Oka, Sociology Department-Seattle Central Community College

How can you use your social and cultural capital to enhance your goals as a leader?   Learn how to leverage your current resources and networks to accomplish anything.  Kayleen Oka is a faculty member in the Sociology Department from Seattle Central Community College.

Keep the Peace: Mediating Conflict         

 

Shift your paradigms around negative associations with conflict and see how conflict can be an opportunity for change, growth and authenticity.  In this session, you will learn some basic mediation skills that can bring you and the people around you out of any conflict situation.

Come join us for some inspirational leadership words from one specially selected faculty, staff and student. Student leadership recognitions will be announced as well as the distribution of First Fridays Leadership Institute Certificates of Completion. Celebrate after with a dessert buffet to honor your contributions to campus.
