First Fridays Leadership Institute

Leadership Off the Grid: A Leadership Development Series

The First Fridays Leadership Institute is a regular series of leadership development workshops, offered the first Friday of each month.  These hands-on, interactive sessions are designed to build practical leadership skills, including public speaking, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, and more.

Students that attend 5 or more sessions throughout the year will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the academic year.

The Power of Nonviolence

Presented by Natasha Burrowes, Director of Multicultural Affairs and Leadership

How does violence manifest in our current society and what kind of impact does that have on community?  Can social change happen without the use of violence?  Come to this workshop to learn the philosophy and practice of nonviolence. We will explore the relevance of nonviolence in current struggles for social justice and equity.  Natasha Burrowes was trained by the Fellowship of Reconciliation in nonviolent practice and philosophy and has been a nonviolence trainer for the past 15 years

Authentic Leadership

Presented by John DuBois, M.A. Ed., Antioch University

Bringing your whole self to the leadership experience can transform communities and lead the collective to higher truths.  This session will help you explore who you are as a person and how you can bring the gift of self to leadership.   John DuBois is a graduate of Highline Community College class of 2005 and currently serves an adjunct faculty member at Antioch University in the School of Education.

Community organizing is the process of bringing people together to build power they wouldn’t have individually in order to create lasting change. But it’s not just about big sweeping social change movements; it’s about everyday people working together to address the issues that affect them. Learn why community organizing is powerful and effective and how to apply the principles of community organizing to your own leadership development.

Almost every industry is looking for leadership qualities in their future employees.  Come to this workshop to learn how to capture and promote your leadership experiences in a job search process.   Cesar Portillo comes with expertise and extensive experience in the human resources industry and currently serves as the Vice-President for Human Resources as Bellevue College.

Student leadership recognitions will be announced as well as the distribution of First Fridays Leadership Institute Certificates of Completion.
